Sulfates are inexpensive chemicals used by manufacturers to provide cleansing action and a bubbly lather. On the ingredients list, you'll come across sodium laureth ether sulfate (SLES) and sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS).
Similar to many other detergents, SLS is a skin irritant, with the irritation increasing with concentration. In experiments done on humans and animals, SLES causes eye and skin irritation.
