Bone broth as a healing aid isn't new. It goes all the way back to the Paleolithic era when early man used every part of the hunted animal out of necessity. Meals were hard to come by, so they found creative ways to extract as much of the nutrients as possible.

The bone broth trend

The rise of the paleo diet led to the popularity of bone broth. Paleo focuses on eliminating processed foods and returning to how our ancient ancestors ate.

How is this broth made?

To make broth from chicken, beef, or pork bones, you boil them to release the amino acids, collagen, and proteins from the bones and their marrow.

There are numerous health benefits associated with bone broth. Let's look at a few.

1. FIRMS YOUR SKIN

Bones contain lots of collagen, which is a fundamental component of youthful skin. From the age of 25, our natural collagen production drastically declines. This causes wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging skin.

The collagen in bone broth helps in tightening and firming your skin. It also boosts healthier hair growth.

2. HEALTHY GUT

The leaky gut syndrome occurs when intestinal walls become loose, allowing bacteria to penetrate the intestines and infect the bloodstream.

Bone broth is high in glutamine, a crucial component in fighting leaky gut. Also, this amino acid helps to reduce inflammation, regulate stomach acid, and help with digestion.

3. PROTECT YOUR JOINTS

The reduction in inflammation also applies to your joints. The collagen in bone broth maintains the cartilage in joints and saves them from deterioration.

4. BOOST YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM

The vitamins and minerals in bone broth fortify your immune system by making ensuring you have a well-balanced nutrition profile. Also, the amino acids and collagen help alleviate inflammation- helpful when battling upper respiratory infections and flu symptoms.

The protein in bone broth promotes faster healing, with everything from scratches to broken bones.

5. SUPPORT YOUR WEIGHT LOSS GOALS

The high protein content of soup gives you a full feeling minus the excess calories. When you feel full for longer, you're less tempted to reach for snacks at random.

DIY bone broth

Here is our quick tutorial for making nutritious bone broth at home.

INGREDIENTS:

1 pound of bones from organic, pasteurized beef, pork, chicken, or lamb

Enough water to cover the bones fully

1-2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar

1-2 teaspoons of salt

INSTRUCTIONS:

Place the bones in a slow cooker or pot. For extra nutrition, include feet, beaks, and other cartilaginous parts.

Cover the bones with water and let it sit for 30 min.

Add the apple cider vinegar and let it simmer for 20-24 hours. Tip: the longer you cook your broth, the more nutrients you extract.

For a power-packed broth, toss in vegetable scraps and herbs as well.

WHY APPLE CIDER VINEGAR?

Adding this ingredient will help to extract more calcium and minerals from the bones due to its low pH balance.
