5 Simple, Practical Ways to Spread Kindness

5 Simple, Practical Ways to Spread Kindness

"How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single minute before starting to improve the world."- Anne Frank

You don't have to wait for a reason to be kind or an opportunity to give back. You can decide to do better for yourself and others right now.

Harvard Business School did a survey of happiness in 136 countries in 2010 and found that financially altruistic people were happiest overall.

You don't have to wait for the holiday season when you're around family and friends to spread kindness and goodwill. You can start right now, where you are.

Five ways to spread kindness today

Acts of kindness don't have to be grandiose or costly. You can spread the cheer through doing simple things.

1. Random acts

Try doing at least one random act of niceness for a stranger. You could pay for their drive-thru meal, offer to help them carry their grocery bags, or leaving a 40% tip at the restaurant.

2. Small gifts

Turn the focus off of yourself for a while. Consider buying your friend or coworker a gift on a random day- don't wait for their birthday.

It shows that someone thought of them and spent time and money picking out the gift. This small action will make their day and remain in their memory.

3. Volunteer

There's always a place that needs volunteers. Whether it's a retirement home, a hospital, or school, you can find ways to give back.

Apart from helping other people, volunteering gives you a sense of fulfillment and boosts your mental health.

4. Favors

Most times, when someone asks us for a favor, we don't want to do it because it inconveniences us. However, the next time someone asks you to watch their kids, for instance, accept the request and spread the good cheer.

5. Kind words

Don't assume that those around you know that you appreciate them. Say it out loud- it goes a long way in elevating their mood. It also strengthens your relationship.

"I can live for two months on a good compliment."- Mark Twain

You are such a good parent/friend/sibling. Your input on this project is excellent. I love your dress/ hair. Such simple statements have a significant positive impact. And when you make someone feel good, you also feel good.

Strive to spread kindness when, where, and how you can. As you do good, you spread positive energy. Kindness is contagious, and its effects spread and grow beyond the original act.
