Have you heard of "sulfate-free" shampoos? Today we're looking at why it's important to seriously consider using sulfate-free shampoos like the AWAKENING ORGANIC SHAMPOO.
What are sulfates?
Sulfates are inexpensive chemicals used by manufacturers to provide cleansing action and a bubbly lather. On the ingredients list, you'll come across sodium laureth ether sulfate (SLES) and sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS).
Why are these bubble-forming agents toxic?
Similar to many other detergents, SLS is a skin irritant, with the irritation increasing with concentration. In experiments done on humans and animals, SLES causes eye and skin irritation.
Here are other results from studies on SLS and SLES:
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate causes cataracts in adults and delays the healing of wounds on the surface of the cornea.
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate disrupts the biological systems of the skin.
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate absorbs quickly into the body. It accumulates in the heart, liver, and brain and can cause significant problems in these areas.
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate destroys the hair follicles and impairs the ability to grow hair.
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate causes the skin to flake and to separate. Also, it causes roughness on the skin.
Shampoos containing SLS could retard healing and keep children's eyes from developing correctly, especially children under six years.
In clinical studies, SLS is deliberately used to irritate the skin so that the effects of other substances can be tested.

Sulfates lead to worsening of existing skin problems, skin irritations, and hair loss in some cases. Sulfates are effective cleansers but are too harsh for our delicate scalp, hair, and hair follicles.
